Fall 2022 update: Violet and Varruca, our Nigerian Dwarf does, have matured into great goats! We started with our two does and have added a buck. We built out a 12'x24' paneled enclosure for the girls and it is the right size. We decided to repeat that size enclosure for the buck as well. That whole area will then be fenced in with some livestock fencing for an extra layer of security.
Violet is just a love bug. Here are the photos of when they came home. They are about full grown now. Nigerian dwarf's top out at around 40-50 pounds.
Varruca is our mouthy one. She chews on everything and can actually be a little destructive. They inherit the disposition of their mother's, so select wisely!
In summer of 2022, we brought in our buck. We named him Charlie Bucket (of course we did!) after the main character of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Our plan for the girls is to provide us milk for cheese making and cooking. We knew we needed a buck to make that happen, so we have a buck from a local breeder and he came home a few weeks ago.
This being our first time raising goats, we were not aware that the "process" of studding a doe can take months. Goats ovulate for only a few days of a heat and if it does not take during that cycle, you have to wait for the next cycle!
This meant we had to make a decision, pay a stud service to house and feed our does for mingling and have the goats away for months, or bring in our own buck. As we always planned to breed anyway, we chose the latter.
One thing to note, we chose not to disbud (remove horn buds) our goats. If you follow along after us...know that this is for the brave! They really can swing those things around hard...been warned :)
