We currently have 12 hens and will soon be getting a Buff Orphington rooster. Six of our hens are ones we raised from chicks and we inherited three hens when we bought our property. We have two coops, one for our egg hens that we designed for mobility and the other is the one that the breeding flock will be housed in.
Our overall flock consists of all different hen breeds.

Buff Orpingtons
We are also adding a flock of Buff Orphingtons and the four starter hens are currently residing in our master bathroom under a heat lamp We will be adding a rooster the bunch and these will be our breeding flock. Buff's are dual purpose birds, they provide a decent egg production and can also be raised for meat. These first four will offer egg production with the others, but also fertilized eggs for propagation. There will be a third, smaller, coop built to house meat birds and those birds will be off spring of these. Ultimately, we will have a self sustaining flock.
We will be closing off the area with fencing to provide an open area for them to be out of their coop that will have the empty space filled in with garden. They will offer pest protection for our vegetables.
220222 Update: The birds are getting so big and quickly! Super friendly, even the shyest ones will come up to our hands out of curiosity. Each of the four has such a distinct personality...though that is the only way I can tell them apart really. They are very similar looking.
